Nyabarongo Hydro Power: Residents Protest Compensation Delays

{{Nyabarongo residents affected by the construction of a hydro power plant in their area are protesting against delays in their compensation.}}

The hydro power plant is located in Muhanga District on the River Nyabarongo.

They claim they have been waiting for their compensation for the past four years to pave way for the construction of the Power plant.

It was reported that about $ 98 Million was allocated to the construction of the plant while about Rwf 2 billion was to be spent on the relocation of 297 residents to facilitate activities of construction.

Some of residents said since then they have not received any money to the effect.

The Mayor of Muhanga District Yvonne Mutakwasuku said the delay in payment was due to mistakes committed during the process of registering their properties.

She added that Rwanda Ministry of Infrastructure has already paid about Frw1.5 billion to some of the residents adding that the remaining number will be paid once their properties are valued.
