Nurse arrested over abortion gone wrong, death

A nurse, operating a private clinic in Karangazi sector of Nyagatare district is being held by police over unprofessional behavior and negligence of duty that led to the death of a young girl who went for medical assistance at her clinic after taking traditional herbs to induce abortion.

The nurse is arrested with a woman who had provided the herbs to the deceased, along with two other girls (ages 18, 20 and 24 years old) who had also received abortion-inducing herbs from the woman.

The Eastern Province police spokesperson, IP Emmanuel Kayigi told the media that the administered herbs harmed their lives and sought for assistance from the clinic.
After giving treatment to the girls, the nurse left them on drip, left for home to rest at around 1.00am in the morning. One of the three girls fell critically ill and died in the night with no one attending to her.

Kayigi said that the nurse will be charged with negligence of duty.
