Northern Corridor countries commit to building own capacities

{Stakeholders in charge of capacity building in Northern Corridor say that governments spend a lot of money in the implementation of various projects since they have to seek expertise from foreigners that are expensively remunerated. }

The permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Dr Célestin Ntivuguruzwa says such losses can be minimized f the member states in question direct efforts toward building capacities of their citizens.

He pointed out some projects in the mining sector requiring foreign experts that are paid in dollars, arguing that building home skills is a far better and more affordable alternative.

It was revealed yesterday during a five-day meeting bringing together technocrats from Northern Corridor member states to collectively seek ways of addressing the challenge of very highly pad experts recruited at international levels.

It was urged that building local skills would enable a number of projects to support economic development of the countries in question in the areas of construction, mineral extraction, road construction, and extraction petroleum and expanding technology among others without necessarily relying on expatriates.

Ntivuguruzwa said that they are seeking how Northern Corridor countries can provide scholarships for Masters Degrees and PhDs.

Samuel Wasikyuyu Wanyoni, the assistant director of vocational education in Kenya said that every country will select students to be sponsored and send them in 17 model universities.

“We want to build self reliance. We no longer need to spend our money on foreign experts. Every country will send 34 people to excellent universities to get well knowledgeable employees ready to fast-track development,” he said.

“The most important is not the degree but knowledge in managing vocational works and making people produce results,” added Samuel.
