No Rwandan will use candles by 2018 – Musoni

{The Minister of Infrastructures, James Musoni has said that electricity will have been availed to all Rwandans not later than 2020 at affordable prices. }

Musoni who was yesterday appearing on a talk show ‘Kubaza Bitera Kumenya’ of Radio Rwanda, said that the target is line with government’s goal of abandoning the usage of candles by 2018 which is common especially in rural areas.

“No Rwandan will be lighting with a candle beyond 2018,”said Musoni.

He said that the government is partnering with private investors as a way of increasing generation and distribution of electricity which has seen power supply multiply four times over the past eight years.

“We currently have 200 Megawatt from 50 Megawatts we had in 2008 with 92% of the country’s sectors offices having access to electricity. We target to distribute electricity to all sectors soon,” he said.

Musoni said that rural dwellers should put in villages to as they are bound to benefit from the government’s program of distributing electricity as a pillar of development.

Rwanda has this month inaugurated KivuWatt power project expected to generate 100 Megawatt from Methane Gas in Kivu Lake by 2020.

The government targets 563 Megawatts by 2018.

Minister Musoni says that Rwanda will have enough electricity by 2021 and start distributing the surplus to neighboring countries.
