Ngoma mayor urges youth Volunteers to prevent crime

The mayor of Ngoma District, Aphrodise Nambaje has urged the youth to drive the anti-crime awareness agenda and be reliable agents of change.

The mayor made the call on May 13 while addressing about 100 members of Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community Policing Organization (RYVCPO) in the district.

The meeting was also attended by local leaders and police in the district to draw effective strategies in crime prevention and detection.

Specifically, the meeting focused on harmonizing cooperation between the three entities through timely information sharing, how to address the issue of children dropping out of school, wooing more young people in the district to join the youth volunteers organization and having their structure both at the district and the sector levels.

The organization composed of about 20, 000 members countrywide include students, graduates and mentors and strives to raise community awareness and fight against crimes through promotion of community safety and realizing the idea of human security.

Nambaje commended the role of the youth volunteers and their impact in reviving societies and behavioral change.

“As the district and the country, we will continue to count on your efficient and effective support to change the people’s behavior in all aspects including security, peace and development,” Nambaje told the youth.

“This country can only be let down by those, who sit back and see crimes happening but fail to take any appropriate action, but again the country counts on you to fill that gap and change the mentality of such people.”

According to David Niyitugize, the district coordinator of RYVCPO, the meeting also intended to bring the district local leadership up to speed on its duties and responsibilities, owing to the fact that some of the leaders are new.

The District Police Commander of Ngoma, Senior Supt. Janvier Mutaganda thanked the volunteers for their strong partnership to fight and prevent crimes, but challenged them to also think of how to develop themselves.

He also pledged police commitment to support YVCPO in their initiatives to combat crime at all times.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to strengthen cooperation, partner in supporting vulnerable genocide survivors especially during the one hundred days of the 22 commemoration period.

The youth organization also supports vulnerable groups by building their houses and giving them insurance premium, among others.
