New Methods to Settle Land Disputes Unveiled

The Rwanda Initiative for Sustainable Development has announced that popular awareness on land law and empowering Community mediation committees “Abunzi” will have positive impact on the settlement of land disputes.

Research conducted among landholders in the districts of Gasabo, Kamonyi, Kayonza and Kirehe showed that 74% of Rwandans are unaware of the land law.

66% of them are not satisfied with the way Abunzi resolve land disputes, whereas 83% of Abunzi do not have required documents in which they register disputes.

Research also shows that more than 13,000 cases settled by Abunzi, more than 6,000 concern land succession, illegal marriages as well as illegally purchased land ownership.

Annie Kairaba, director of Rwanda Initiative for Sustainable Development (RISD) said that RISD is committed to use different strategies to put an end to land disputes.

She said more small farmers will be trained on land law adding that Abunzi will be equipped with knowledge and skills needed to settle disputes.
