New impetus for Rwanda-Spain cooperation

{President Paul Kagame yesterday received credentials of five ambassadors representing their countries in Rwanda including Felix Costales Artieda representing Spain. }

Rwanda-Spain relationship has been on rocks since 2008 when a Spanish judge Fernando Andreu Merelles issued an arrest warrant of 40 Rwandans including former high government officials.

The warrant was despised by the government of Rwanda and things became bitterer on the arrest of Lt Gen Karenzi Karake, former intelligence chief who was released on September 10th 2015 after the Spanish court vindicated the 40 Rwanda government officials.

After he was welcomed by President Paul Kagame, Ambassador Felix Costales Artieda told the press that bilateral relations between Rwanda and Spain are set to register cordiality. “We had had serious challenges between our bilateral relations in the past, especially issuing the arrest warrants by the Spanish high court. Such a situation has come to an end,” attention,” he said.

He also discussed with president Kagame about the performance of the African Union, East African Community where he represents his country in EAC .Spain as a member of European Union supports 40% of EAC projects.

Ambassador Costales said Spain’s interest in cooperating with Sub-Sahara African countries is increasing.
