{The National Commission for the Fight Against Genocide (CNLG) has observed that trauma related to genocide is a challenge worrying Rwandans and requested particular research to be carried out and establish how best the challenge can be handled.}
CNLG revealed this yesterday during the presentation of achievements to the Senatorial Standing Committee on Political Affairs called to discuss the commission’s annual report.
The senatorial committee was informed that the matter of genocide-related trauma will affect future generations as it permeates to the next youngsters of those who were kids during the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi.
The CNLG executive secretary Dr Jean Damascene Bizimana observed that pragmatic assessment on possible causes of various trauma cases should be done at the earliest under the auspices of MINISANTE. He mentioned the affected categories that need attention including; genocide perpetrators, genocide survivors, children of genocide perpetrators and children of raped mothers among others.
“We recommend that trauma cases should be researched upon in general and propose particular approaches for each category based on every individual case,” said Bizimana.
The president of the senatorial commission in charge of good governance, Sindikubwabo Népomuscène said that the matter needs strong partnership of different stakeholders to be solved adding that Rwanda would be a country of traumatized people if nothing is done.
Senator Mukasine Marie Claire said that concerned parties must stand with those suffering from trauma to avoid the destruction of future communities, calling for wide advocacy and strong policies on the matter. CNLG has therefore committed to lead in tackling the trauma challenge as senators deepen the advocacy programs.
