The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Louis Mushikiwabo, has called for more action in promoting women engagement in politics among African countries at various levels of leadership.
Mushikiwabo conveyed the message yesterday during the opening of the 4th High Level Dialogue on Democracy and Governance in Africa held in Kigali under the theme: “Women’s Equal Participation and Leadership in Political Parties.”
During the official opening of the dialogue at Kigali Serena Hotel, Mushikiwabo said that “when women enjoy their rights at home, it gets reflected in eloquent performance at work, pass over that dignity to others and create a very strong family institution and general progress of the entire continent.”
She noted that benefits that arise out of women empowerment seep deeper in communities since, by nature, women serve others before self aggrandizement.
Dr. Aisha L. Abdullahi, the Commissioner for Political Affairs African Union Commission, said that the year 2015 was dedicated to women empowerment as ratified by heads of state and government, June 2015, in Equatorial Guinea.
This year, the AU focused on women equal participation and leadership in political parties and realizing an oppression-free Africa.
The Minister of Family and Gender Promotion, Oda Gasinzigwa said gender equality should go beyond levels of decision making to involve job creation for women which are, apparently, at a low take.
The dialogue was organized by Rwanda Governance Board in collaboration with African Union and attracted 300 delegates from African countries.
The Global Gender Gap Index report released by World Economic Forum on 19th November 2015, ranked Rwanda as the best in Africa and the 6th in the world to promote gender equality.
