Museveni, Kagame, Kenyatta to Discuss DRC Turmoil

{President Uhuru Kenyatta has arrived in New York, U.S. on Sunday to attend the 69th United Nations General Assembly and other bilateral meetings.}

He will be joined by regional leaders, Yoweri Museveni and Paul Kagame who were already in United States attending several functions.

During the weekend, Museveni met business leaders in Texas while Kagame presided over the 6th edition of the annual Rwanda Day celebrations in Atlanta.

Before attending the UNGA, the three leaders will attend a high-level security meeting on the Democratic Republic of Congo and the region.

The Regional Oversight Mechanism of the Peace, Security and Co-operation Framework for the DRC and the region on Monday will discuss recent political and security developments in the region.

These include the failure of FDLR to fully disarm and surrender weapons and the progress registered in fighting the Allied Democratic Forces in Eastern Congo.

Tensions have been mounting along the Congo-Rwanda border after the FDLR wrote to President Robert Mugabe, saying it would not lay down weapons due to lack of trust in the United Nations.

ChimpReports understands the meeting will also highlight the progress of the implementation of the oversight mechanism of the Peace, security and Cooperation (PSC) Framework on Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the region.

Rwanda maintains it will not hold any dialogue with the masterminds of the 1994 genocide, saying FDLR must denounce the genocide ideology and surrender or face military action.

Regional bodies SADC and ICGLR have as well warned FDLR of serious consequences should they fail to demobilize.

It should be noted that DRC President Joseph Kabila intends to facilitate the amendment of the Constitution to serve another term in office after the expiry of the two mandatory terms, a move that recently sparked off riots in Kinshasa.

The United States maintains that Kabila must not tamper with the Constitution for the peace and stability of the region.

On his part, President Kenyatta will also attend a meeting on domestic financing for health whose theme is ‘Invest to Save’, which will be held at the UN headquarters.

On Tuesday, the President will attend the opening plenary of the 2014 Climate Summit for Heads of State and Government. On Wednesday, he will address the UN General Assembly.

First Lady Margaret Kenyatta will deliver the keynote address at a meeting for all the First Ladies focusing on maternal and new born health with special emphasis on adolescent girls.
