Musanze: Residents sensitised on fighting Gender Based Violence

{Residents of Rwasa Sector in Musanze District have been called upon to sustain the existing efforts in the fight against gender and sexual violence.}

While addressing the residents, the District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO) for Musanze, Inspector of Police (IP) Viateur Ntiyamira, asked the residents to support their neighbours to live in harmony by reporting any household that could be affected with internal conflicts.

He noted that there are serious social and legal consequences to abusers, victims and the community at large.

“When you keep quiet about violence of any sort in your neighbourhood, you will be equally promoting conflicts and insecurity in one way or another. By reporting such conflicts, you will be preventing conflicts, promoting community safety and peace,” IP Ntiyamira said.

“You need to exhibit responsible behaviour in order to protect others from violence,” he said.

She advised against stigmatization of those that have been abused.

“Those that have been a bused shouldn’t be stigmatised but rather protected, supported and rehabilitated.”

He said that the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls should be a collective role which can be achieved by sharing information about potential threats to human rights.

The sensitization was in the framework of the recently concluded 16 days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence.
