Close to sixty youths from Muhoza Sector of Musanze District have joined the Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community Policing (RYVCP) to further boost efforts in raising awareness against crimes and promote community safety.
They made the commitment on December 17 during an anti-crime awareness campaign conducted by Rwanda National Police (RNP) in the sector.
Currently are over 270 members on RYVCP in Muhoza sector.
While speaking to the youth, the District Community Liaison Officer, Inspector of Police (IP) Viateur Ntiyamira, urged them to always play their role as agents of change and deliver according to the expectations by avoiding and fighting crime.
“Be exemplary in your communities and at school. You should be bold and come out to denounce injustices such as gender based violence, drug abuse, human trafficking and more – and also alert Police about suspicious elements in your neighborhoods,” he said.
“You should utilize your organization and discuss positive initiatives on how to overcome challenges in your communities and also look out for your fellow youth and sensitize them about Rwandan laws.”
AP Ntiyamira further noted that the youth are the majority vulnerable group in abusing drugs and becoming addicts.
“We need to reverse this trend and perception together; when you report your neighbor or any person trafficking or selling illicit substances, you will have played your part in promoting community safety and security, and preventing fellow youth from falling victims,” he said.
The District coordinator of RYVCP, Theodore Murangamirwa commended RNP for its close partnership with the youth, adding that through the organization, the youth in Rwanda will always strives to ensure that the young generation are patriotic citizens and influential in maintaining safety.
“Rwanda is developing fast, meaning that we the youth must be part of that development. We should shun anything that tries to divert us and concentrate on education and look out for those who try to destabilize our country. Let us continue to partner with Police in every beneficial way,” Murangamirwa said.
