Musanze: Anti-crime clubs in schools urged to be defined by actions

Anti-crime clubs in schools in Musanze District have been challenged to enhance their community policing activities and make their groups more practical.

The District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO) of Musanze, Inspector of Police (IP) Viateur Ntiyamira made the call while visiting four clubs, all focused on raising awareness gender based violence.

The clubs also seek to raise awareness against unwanted pregnancies, child abuse and defilement among other gender and child related issues.

“It is not only about creating clubs; it also about what you can do and what you have achieved and that’s why such clubs are there,” IP Ntiyamira said.

“Mobilize fellow youth in your communities to strengthen partnership with police to help solve society’s most pressing problems to overcome them,” he added.

“Through such groupings, you can influence positive change be it within your schools where some of the students indulge in unlawful acts like abusing drugs, or in your respective communities where some parents subject their children to hard labour, corporal punishment and other domestic violence, which should as well be reported so that the existing domestic issues are addressed before they turn violent.”

He advised them to use drama and songs in conducting crime prevention campaigns and also exploit police toll free lines for crime reporting; among those are, emergency call 112, child help line 116, GBV 3512, traffic and road safety 113, corruption 997 and fire and rescue services 111.

Elsewhere, students of GS Mwurire in Huye District and GS Cyamukuza in Gisagara District also formed anti-crime clubs that will focus on fighting drug abuse.

Currently, there are over 1000 anti-crime clubs established in various schools countrywide.
