Muhanga: Muslim community urged to champion fight against radicalization

{The Commissioner for Counterterrorism at Rwanda National Police (RNP) Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Denis Basabose urged the Islamic community that they have the ability of ensuring that no single case of radicalization is reported on the Rwandan territory by recommitting to the fight.}

He made the remarks while addressing over 80 Islamic leaders during their three-day retreat held at Ecole de Fille Islamique Hamdan Bin Rachid in Muhanga District where he urged them to use community policing in addressing all crime-related issues.

“Community policing as a crime prevention strategy can also be used in counterterrorism efforts and create collaborative ways to work with the different social groups including religions in ensuring safety. It is through Community policing that we can share information, identify and deradicalizing any affected characters,” said ACP Basabose.

He urged Muslim leaders to ensure they contribute to increasing citizens’ willingness to cooperate in crimes prevention as well as preventing young people from engaging in crime, violence, and extremists activities.

ACP Basabose told Muslim leaders that; “Collaboration is one way we can collectively avoid cases of radicalization from rooting in our communities ; wherever you encounter a situation of radicalization or extremism, quickly inform the relevant authorities…this is why we formed this kind of partnership.”

Although there haven’t been many cases in Rwanda, RNP says that such kind of meetings provide framework for preventing radicalism and extremism.
