MTN Rwanda to support renovation of homes for genocide widows

MTN donated Rwf 8 million to the Association of the Widows of Rwanda, AVEGA Agahozo, as well as Kinyinya Sector Authority for the renovation of houses for genocide widows. The handover took place at a handover event held at the MTN headquarters in Nyarutarama.

Speaking at the handover, Mary Asiimwe, MTN’s General Manager for Human Resources & Corporate Affairs Management said that the assistance offered to the widows is meant to facilitate the completion of houses to improve the standards of living for the widows.

“Every year MTN supports vulnerable genocide survivors in different parts of Rwanda, and has for a long time also supported AVEGA Agahozo. By supporting the renovation of homes and seeing the completion of an income generating structure for the widows, we ensure that these women are cared for and in the long run aim at attaining self-reliance”, Asiimwe said.

President of AVEGA Agahozo, Mrs Mukabayire Valerie appreciated MTN’s constant support towards vulnerable genocide survivors in the country.

“AVEGA members have received diverse support from MTN Rwanda over the years which has been very helpful in the improvement of the widows’ welfare.”

AVEGA Agahozo was established in 1995 to provide advocacy for the empowerment and re-integration of genocide widows and their dependents into Rwandan Society. The organisation is dedicated to providing psychological and physical healthcare and support to survivors, as well as improving their economic stability through integrated and effective national level programs.

The Executive Secretary of Kinyinya Sector, Felix Kayihura also expressed his gratitude to MTN and said, “MTN’s support, be it monetary or emotional, will go a long way in helping to rebuild the lives of the survivors, especially when it comes to striving for a brighter and sustainable future.”
