MTN Rwanda, a telecommunications company, in collaboration with six transport companies that ply upcountry routes, has launched a new money transfer platform of travel fares payment using ‘Mobile Money’.
During the inauguration of the platform, the managing director of MTN Rwanda, Gunter Engling, said that most of MTN subscribers use mobile money services and travel on bus. He then lauded the new technology in paying for transport fares saying it will go a long way in easing transactions and saving time.
Evode Habamenshi, managing director of Capital Express, a passenger transportation company, also noted that the new platform of payment will facilitate clients to buy tickets without necessarily going to transport agencies’ offices for booking.
Emmanuel Katabarwa the head of Transport at Rwanda Utility Regulatory Agency (RURA) commended MTN for being the first telecommunication company to introduce transport fare payments using mobile money.
Katabarwa added that the government will continue to support business activities promoting technology with an intention of boosting the country’s progress.
For a client of MTN to buy the ticket using mobile phone, it is advised to dial *726# and then follow the prompts.
Recently MTN Rwanda connected Mobile Money services with bank accounts subscribers where they can send cash to their bank accounts using mobile money.
