Rwanda’s first giant mobile telecommunication and internet provider, MTN has cautioned the general public that its internet subscribers will face some inconsistency with internet speeds.
According to the communiqué from MTN, the inconsistency in the internet connection will be due to EASSy cable disruptions detected between Djibouti and Port Sudan, which carries the majority of Rwanda’s international Internet traffic.
The communiqué indicates that 80% the internet traffic is through the EASSy undersea cable that is also linked through Tanzania.
“Due to these cuts, especially on routes undersea and in remote areas, we are facing challenges in offering bandwidth to full capacity,” the communiqué reads in parts.
“The impact is substantial as we are now remaining with 20 percent of our capacity. However we have currently channelled all our traffic through an alternative route through Uganda. The company managing the EASSy cable has dispatched a vessel to fix the problem,” said Chief Marketing Officer, Yvonne Manzi Makolo.
MTN Rwanda is also currently working with other providers to see how the service can be restored as soon as possible.
“We are looking at alternative solutions with other providers to offer subscribers with uninterrupted Internet connection,” The communiqué indicated.
As a major communications company, MTN is specifically focused on the Africa and the Middle East.
Serving you since 1998, MTN Rwanda continues to expand its network, offer new and innovative packages and services, and keep up with the latest trends in communications while maintaining affordability.

MTN Rwanda has over 2.9million subscribers and its network coverage extends to over 98 percent of the population, according to the communiqué.
