{Commercial motorcyclists operating in Muhanga District have recommitted to streamline their professional and adopt internal guidelines to ensure discipline to respect traffic rules and regulations and promote road safety.}
This was resolved during their meeting that brought together over 500 members in Muhanga organized under their cooperative, UCOTAMOMU held on July 7.
The meeting held in Gahogo Cell in Nyamabuye Sector was also attended by , Inspector of Police (IP) Claver Kayihura, the District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO) of Muhanga.
Jean Damascene Nyabyenda, the coordinator of UCOTAMOMU said: “There are times when some of the members breach road safety guidelines causing fatal accidents. It rests in our responsibilities as leaders and well to ensure that such safety standards are observed.”
He urged them not to be taken away by the desire for money and forget their lives.
“This is a business like any other, which has changed lives of many but has claimed lives of others partly due to one’s inappropriate behavoiur,” Nyabyenda added.
IP Kayihura said most motorcyclists ride carelessly and make reckless maneuvers, which cause accidents.
Motorcyclists are said to be among the majority of those involved in road accidents while they are the most causalities.
He further urged them to be strong partners with police and always provide information on anyone attempting to use their services to commit crimes like smugglers and drug dealers.
