{{Motorcycle taxi operators have been warned against violating traffic rules, which lead to a high number of road accidents in the country.}}
Addressing over one thousand motorcyclists operating in Kigali on Tuesday, the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Operations, Dan Munyuza said that despite several awareness, several operators ride without licence and still do not wear helmets which in most cases result into deaths in case of an accident.
Most accidents registered in the country are caused by motorcycles, according to police reports, due to bad maneuvers and failure to respect traffic regulations.
He urged them to operate in cooperatives, wear reflector jackets, helmets and observe discipline in their profession.
He also disclosed that each operator will soon be given a performance card, where their traffic offences will be recorded and which will be a baseline to revoking their licence.
Fidele Ndayisaba, the Mayor of the City of Kigali also cautioned the operators against over loading, not respecting traffic lights and refusing to stop when asked by officers, which he said is an act of indiscipline and unprofessional conduct.
During the event held at Nyamirambo stadium, Tigo donated about 1000 reflector jackets to cyclists operating in Kigali.
