MINISANTE to Grade Hotels & Restaurants

The ministry of health (MINISANTE) has announced that it yet to classify and rate medium sized hotels and restaurants in the country based on the level of hygiene and service delivery.

The development was revealed by Philibert Cyiza, an official from the ministry of health, during a meeting that brought together hotel and restaurant owners in Rwanda, on Friday.

Hotel and restaurant proprietors were briefed on the criteria set by the common code of conduct in the EAC region regarding classification and ratings of hotels and restaurants, as well as service standards.

Dennis Karera, the chairman of the Association of Hotel and Restaurants in Rwanda, observed that merging of operations and improved service delivery is one of the prerequisite to accelerated development of the hotelier and tourism sectors in Rwanda.

Cyiza Philibert, from the ministry of health during a one day meeting, said that star grading for big hotels and restaurants in Rwanda by Rwanda development Board RDB in partnership with its stakeholders boosts efficiency in customer service delivery.

He explained that the fact that small sized hotels and restaurants are not classified cheats these facilities a chance to compete for awards in their category, hence rendering a gap in the offering improved services.

It is in response to this reality that the ministry of health, in collaboration with the ministry of Trade and Industry, Rwanda Bureau of Standards, Rwanda Environmental Management Authority, Rwanda Agriculture Board and other institutions, has established standards for classification and rating of medium sized hotels and restaurants, based on hygiene and service standard.
