Minister Harerimana urges ‘Officer Cadets’ to persevere

{The Minister for Internal Security, Sheikh Musa Fazil Harerimana has challenged ‘Officer Cadets’ attending the seventh cadet intake at the Police Training School in Gishari, Rwamagana District to persevere and maintain the spirit of hard work and patriotism as they await to for their graduation soon, to take on their policing tasks. }

The Minister was speaking at PTS on February 9 at a get together party organized by the school.

He lauded the trainees for staying focused during the entire course and urged them to maintain the spirit for the remaining two steps of being “commissioned and putting the acquired skills to work.”

A total of 466 Officer Cadets, 51 of them females, are attending the 7th intake, the second to be conducted at PTS, which started in April last year.

He further noted that training is an inevitable tool if one wants to stay on course with the modern policing demands.

“The politics of building strong security organs cannot be attained without training,” Minister Harerimana said, thanking President Paul Kagame for setting a firm foundation that has made Rwanda one of the safest places globally and going beyond borders to ensure peace and stability in other countries.

He also thanked parents for instilling values and the spirit of patriotism in their children and allowing them to save their country.

The Commandant of PTS, Assistant Commissioner of Police Denis Basabose noted that the trainees have been equipped with necessary skills in drills, management, leadership, command, fitness and paramilitary.

Others include community-based policing, road safety, gender issues, operation stuff work, peace support operations and Human Rights.

“The time you spent on this course has been an investment for you and the institution in pursuit of better performance.”

“RNP has the mandate to safeguard the rule of law and provide a crime-free environment for all. This cannot be achieve without the support of the people you serve and their willingness to cooperate with us depends very much on how our conduct in our day-to-day business. Always be just and demonstrate a high level of professional behavior while responding to the society’s needs,” he added.

The party was also attended by parents of the trainees, officials from public institutions and partners.

It was a moment of joy as parents got to meet their parents and vice-versa after about a year, as they shared moments of smile, laughter as they shared drinks and snacks.

PTS is one of the three schools established by the Rwanda National Police in its pursuit to build capacity of personnel with required knowledge and skills in line with the modern policing demands.

In 1995 the school started as Communal Police Training’ centre and later in 2000, when the Rwanda National Police was established, it was upgrade to a Police Training School as RNP embarked on capacity building through training as a major tool for contemporary policing .

Over 21, 180 recruits (ten intakes) including the former communal police and 927 cadets (two intakes) have graduated from PTS since 1995, which was previously a regional tuberculosis hospital.
