The Minister of Justice, Johnston Busingye has said that any Rwandan living abroad is assisted with emergence in case of a crisis and as long they report to the embassy in the respective countries.
Busingye revealed this yesterday in a meeting that was addressing issues of Migrants in Countries in Crisis (MICIC) that brought together representatives from the south and east corners of Africa.
Minister Busingye cited a recent case of Rwandans that fell victims to Zambia violence where the Rwandan embassy instantly intervened, visited and brought them together for immediate evacuation.
“Any Rwandan from any part of the world that finds him/herself in a crisis is supported. It is Rwanda’s policy,” he said.
The special envoy of UN- Habitat and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Bayan V. Mangibin also noted that migrants are not treated well most of the time yet they contribute to the development of host countries.
“Migrants face several challenges. They play a role in the progress of host countries. This meeting aims at setting principles and programs aimed at granting value to migrants and protect their security in case host countries are in crisis,” he said.
The director of Rwanda’s migration and emigration offices Kalibata Anaclet said that the meeting is being held for the sixth time following other meetings that were held in different parts of the world with the aim of implementing policies that can help migrants in insecure countries, war and other disasters.
Kalibata said that such policies should be embraced in all countries other than leaving such practices to rich countries.
Outcomes of the two-day meeting will be communicated to UN to be evaluated in UN general assembly in September 2016.
Rwanda hosts 18,539 migrants of whom 529 are diplomats, 18,010 are investors, emplopyees, employers and students from more than 150 countries.
