The Ministry of Health has tentatively closed 16 pharmacies, five private health centers suspected of negligence of duty while 14 nurses and pharmacists have been suspended as investigations are undergoing.
Talking to IGIHE, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Health, Nathan Mugume said that the health centers and pharmacies were closed over poor performance and acting against the law.
The statement released by MINISANTE indicates that the decision was taken to save citizens’ lives.
The Ministry of Health added that the suspension is meant to get rid of people working unprofessionally in health sector.
Nathan Mugume said that the suspension followed investigations.
“The outcomes of investigations carried out by MINISANTE this year, indicates that such institutions are no longer eligible to keep operating,” he said.
MINISANTE has temporarily withdrawn certificates of these clinics to be handed back depending on the final findings of the ongoing investigations.
Suspended pharmacies include Tesi’s Pharmacy and Dukundane from Kirehe district, Blatter Pharmacy Ltd and Jary’s Pharmacy from Ngoma district , La Promise, Medserv Pharmacy, Pharmarite Pharmacy and Derikk Pharmacy Ltd from Nyanza district , Iyizire of Nyagatare, Pharmalight Pharmacy, Salvia Pharmacy, Pharmacie De Mugina from Kamonyi district, Rite Pharmacy Ruhango branch , Terranova Pharmacy and AFIA from Ruhango district and Hoho Depot Pharmaceutique from Huye district.
Suspended health centers are, Ihumure ryo muri Kamonyi, Poste de Santé Ruhuha operating in Bugesera, Rengera Ubuzima, Humura and Girimpuhwe from Nyagatare district.
In 2014, the minister of health, Dr. Binagwaho Agnes suspended 10 nurses of Kabgayi hospital including one doctor over negligence of duties.
At that time, she also suspended a private health center which employed nurses without certification.
