As the month of April unfolded, heavy downpours in Kigali and various parts of the country ravaged property and led to deaths.
The Ministry of Refugees and Disaster Management (MIDIMAR) says that nine people died of the heavy rains in Kigali city, three died in Gasabo district while 19 people were injured and more than 300 houses were destroyed.
Based on such ruins, MIDIMAR calls on Rwandans to be prepared to any imminent disasters as the intensity of rainfall is likely to increase.
In a press briefing held yesterday, the minister of Refugees and Disaster Management, Seraphine Mukantabana, said that recent predictions from Rwanda Meteorology Agency indicated that the region in which Rwanda is located will face unusual precipitation, likely to cause various disasters including erosion, floods and storms. She then called on Rwandans to be prepared.
“There is no doubt that we are experiencing unusually heavy rains. Some lives have so far been lost and properties destroyed. I request Rwandans to be prepared and provide support to those affected,” she requested. said.
Mukantabana requested better approaches in building water paths, water harvesting, building water canals and strengthening bridges and roads.
Rwandans are also asked to respect government’s advice like leaving risky zones.
MIDIMAR pledged to relocate people from risky zones.
