Rwanda Football Federation (Ferwafa) president Vincent Degaule Nzamwita spoke of the developments on Monday.
“We are currently in positive talks with Johnny McKinstry and we really think that we shall conclude these talks soon and make an official announcement by the end of this week.”
The 29 year old Irishman who coached the Leone Stars from April 2013 to September 2014 guided the West African nation to their highest Fifa world ranking ever, 50th and seventh on the African continent.
Nzamwita said that the committee selected to produce a shortlist is aware that McKinstry was sacked following Sierra Leone’s failure to qualify for the 2015 Afcon but it was really because they had to play their home games away from home due to the Ebola outbreak.
“He is a young coach and we think that we should give him a chance to coach the Amavubi,” added Nzamwita.
In earlier interview with supersport.com, McKinstry said, “I know that if given the honour of guiding the Rwandan national team over the coming years, that we will achieve success. I have been successful where ever I have been. I make teams better, that is my job, and I have always been good at it.
“Naturally there are many things I do to make that happen, and I look forward to being able to present those ideas to those responsible for selecting the new head coach of the Amavubi,” explained the Irishman.
The job to coach the Amavubi fell vacant after Englishman Stephen Constantine resigned in January after receiving a better offer from the All India Football Federation.
