{The mayor of Musanze District, Jean Claude Musabyimaba has called upon the residents to take the lead in prevention of domestic conflicts and gender based violence.}
The mayor made the call on August 3 in a community meeting with the residents of Nkotsi Sector.
He noted that domestic conflicts mainly affect women and children in the district and urged them to identify and report such families.
“A man or a woman who abuse their spouses showcase a bad image to their children; such misunderstandings partly contribute to children developing conflicts among themselves because they will find each child supporting either parents and the whole situation becomes a mess and at times children leave their homes and end up in other criminal activities like abusing drugs and theft,” Musabyimaba said.
“Such conflicts cause insecurity not only in homes but in the entire community; it will affect their way of development. Be the first to break silence when you witness gender based violence… do not sit back,” he added.
Inspector of Police (IP) Viateur Ntiyamira, the District Community Liaison Officer of Musanze observed that most domestic conflicts are related to property disputes, drunkenness especially by husbands which influences them to batter their wives.
He urged them to utilize available police communication channels like toll-free lines 116 for child abuse, 3512 for Anti-GBV Desk and 3029 for Isange One Stop Centre for quick response and support to victims.
