{{Police in Ruhango district is holding a suspect named Protogene Siborurema after he was arrested allegedly distilling Kanyanga, an illegal brew.}}
Siborurema was arrested red-handed in a police target operation conducted on April 25 in Nyakarekare Cell in Mbuye sector.
Police also seized about 25 liters of kanyanga which the suspect had already distilled.
The operation by police was based on information provided by residents, who were well versed with Siborurema’s illegal business. He is currently detained at Mbuye Police Station.
Shortly after his arrest, Siborurema confessed to the crime and explained that he has been dealing in this illegal business for some time now and asked to be pardoned.
Chief Superintendent Hubert Gashagaza, the Southern region Police Spokesperson said with the current partnership with the community, arresting wrong-doers is inevitable.
“Such crimes have negative impact not only on security but also to national development,” observed Sup Gashagaza.
He urged the community to continue the partnership through information sharing as a “need to fight and prevent criminality of all sorts.”
He challenged residents to opt for other legal and developmental business rather than engaging in illegal businesses such as the sell and consumption of drugs, which he said fuel other crimes like domestic violence and defilement.
Under article 594 of the penal code, any person who unlawfully makes, transforms, imports, or sells narcotic drugs within the country, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of three to five years and a fine of Rwf500, 000 to Rwf5 million.
