The suspect, who is currently detained at, Ndera police post committed the offence on March 16.}}
It is alleged that Mudaheranwa, who works as a security guard at AUCA University in Masoro, seduced the victim into his room at the university and defiled her.
The victim’s family neighbours the university.
An eyewitness said he heard the girl groaning, as he was passing by, only to find the suspect defiling her, when he came for rescue.
The suspect was arrested by locals, who handed him over to police.
The District Police Commander, Superintendent Tom Murangira condemned the act and attributed it to drug abuse. “I am requesting parents to offer protection to their children and ensure that they are not exposed to strangers,” Supt. murangira stated.
“Parents are also to blame, partly, for some cases; they should not go to bars or market places leaving their children with no protection,” he added.
“Usually such people have mental issues or are always under the influence of drugs. There is no way a normal person can commit such a crime. The community should also help us to identify such people who live within our society.
Many are drug addicts and we are requesting the society to share timely information on such people so that we can break the chain of illicit drugs, which is a major cause of crimes such as defilement, rape and assault,” he noted.
If convicted, Mudaheranwa will be punished under Article 191 of the penal code which states that any person, who commits child defilement, shall be liable to life imprisonment with special provisions.
