Police in Kigali City have arrested a man in connection with impersonating officials in the office of Ombudsman and defrauding unsuspecting people.
Daniel Nkudimana, who was paraded yesterday before the media at the Rwanda National Police (RNP) General Headquarters in Kacyiru.
According to Chief Supt. Emmanuel Ngondo said that the suspect was arrested following a collaboration between the Office of Ombudsman and RNP.
It is alleged that by the time of his arrest, Nkudimana made over at least 209 phone calls to different unsuspecting individuals promising to resolve their problems only after giving him money.
Most of them, apparently fell victim.
At the time of his arrest on Tuesday, he was found in possession of 22 sim-cards which he was switching to conduct the criminal acts. 20 of the sim-cards were registered in his name.
“The suspect would camp at court premises to follow up a particular case where he would record particulars of targeted individuals, whom he either to blackmail and promising to handle their issues,” Chief Supt. Ngondo said.
He said after hoodwinking them into believing that he can influence the judgement in their favour, he would ask the unwary person to send money through telecom banking system.
It is the second time Nkudimana is arrested over the same crime.
Last year, he was arrested sentenced to one year in prison for impersonating both the commandant of the RNP General Headquarters and the commander of Gisozi police station.
He completed his sentence a fortnight ago.
Nkudimana is also alleged to be the ringleader of the racket that include five other suspects, who were arrested last month in two separate police operations conducted in Kigali and Rusizi District.
