Man arrested for bribing Police officer

{Whereas Rwanda National Police has continued to sensitize the public against engaging in bribery acts, a few individuals have adamantly refused to take heed. }

This follows an event in Bugesera yesterday where Police arrested a resident identified as Elissa Ukobizaba, 32, who attempted to bribe an Officer for an illegal service.

The suspect was arrested red-handed trying to bribe the officer with Rwf12, 000 in order to release his young brother, who had been arrested the previous day over criminal offences.

Uko bizaba, who confessed to bribery, pleaded for leniency, arguing that he was ignorant of the law.

Early this month, Police in Kigali also arrested 7 drivers, separately, for attempting to offer cash bribes to traffic officers.

However, Inspector of Police Emmanuel Kayigi, the Police Spokesperson in the Eastern Region, strongly warned the public against attempts to bribe Police officers for any service, either to buy freely given services or to seduce the officers to break the law.

“Everyday, we sensitize the public against corruption and bribery. This is a country that has a zero-stance on such vices and we must fight against it whenever it occurs. Police doors are open to any resident who has an issue they want to discuss, therefore, bribery is not a solution because it is a punishable offence,” he said.

If proven guilty Ukobizaba is liable to face a prison sentence between 5 to 7 years and a fine multiplied by 10 times of the amount paid according to article 641 of the Rwandan Penal Code.
