Police in Rusizi District is holding Jean Marie Vianney Habumugisha 25, for assaulting his father with an axe injuring him seriously.
Habumugisha a resident of Nsahaha sector, Nyeji cell allegedly assaulted Janvier Nikobahiga, 53, with an axe after the former returned home late at night drunk.
The incident took place on February 4.
Habumugisha was under the influence of alcohol after he drunk illicit local brew, Muriture, police said.
The assault occurred when Habumugisha returned home late at night and his father delayed to open for him when he knocked.
On opening the door, Nikobahiga was welcomed with an ax on the forehead sending him on the ground unconsciously.
He was saved by neighbours, who can to his rescue after they heard him screaming for help.
Habumugisha at the moment tried to flee, but he was intercepted by neighbours and local authorities, who handed him over to police.
He is currently detained at Muganza Police Station. The victim was also rushed to Mibirizi hospital for treatment.
