Mahama camp: Seven Burundi refugees die in one month

{Seven people, including children and adults among Burundi refugees in Mahama camp located in Kirehe district, have died of various sicknesses since the beginning of November, according to leader of the camp, Pastor Jean Bosco Ukwibishatse. }

According to Ukwibishatse, excessive heat, diarrhea and pneumonia among children are the major causes of such deaths.

“People are dying due to exposure to excessive heat and drinking unsafe water,” he is quoted by Isango Star Radio as saying.

He explained that the camp is running short of medicines yet the number of patients is increasing. “W are waiting for a response since the institutions in charge of disaster management and refugees and UNHCR are aware of the appalling situation.”

The Ministry of Disaster Management and Refugee Affairs (MIDIMAR ) has not revealed the number of deaths.

Mahama camp hosts 46,000 out of 72,000 refugees from Burundi in Rwanda .Others refugees are settled in Bugesera and Nyanza camps among other.
