M23 rejects UN accusations

{The M23 has expressed outrage at a UN report which accuses the group of war crimes between April 2012 and November 2013 at the time it was in control of a part of the province of North Kivu, in the east DRC. }

The Joint United Nations Office for Human Rights (JHRO) has revealed serious violations of human rights and international humanitarian law by the M23.

More than 116 people have been victims of such violation, 351 physically threatened including 161 rape.

The M23 says MONUSCO was present in the administered territories and were provided with full freedom of movement in desired space.

It adds “Yet at that time MONUSCO had not identified anything like the content of the current document.”

In its report published in Kinshasa and in Geneva, the UN says these abuses may constitute international crimes and calls for justice.

The M23 rejects point by point all the allegations and said that it had never ceased to demand the creation of an independent commission of inquiry to establish the facts and, where appropriate, take responsibility.

“The Kinshasa government and its allies are still opposed,” says M23 defeated last November by the Congolese army supported by the peacekeepers of MONUSCO (the UN Mission in the DRC)

After their defeat, some M23 fighters fled to Rwanda and others in Uganda.
