Low numbers in pension scheme worry government

{The government of Rwanda is worried about the small number of Rwandans that subscribe to old age social security, where 90 % of Rwandan workers are not bound to benefit from pension. }

During the 13th national dialogue, ‘Umushyikirano’, the minister of finance and economic planning Amb. Gatete Claver said; “A huge 90% of Rwandans have no social security for their old age. This is a serious challenge.”

Gatete added that new measures need to be implemented to mobilize Rwandans on saving and become active in social security .This issue also came up in recommendations of the national dialogue.

“Rwandans ought to save for their future including child education, housing and meeting other needs as well,” he said.

In a bid to effect mobilization of Rwandans to save for their old age, Rwanda Social Security Board (RSSB) has opened branches in various districts and has been conveying mobilization messages through drama and radio talk-shows among other media genres.

In 2014, only 14% of Rwandans were saving for social security a number said to be insufficient.

In the seven year government plan, it is expected that the number of Rwandans saving through financial institutions and cooperatives will reach 100%.
