Lightning Kills INES Employee

{Lightning strike killed an employee of Ruhengeri Institute of Applied Sciences formerly known as INES Ruhengeri in an incidence that happened on 17th Oct, 2014 around 15h00 PM.}

The deceased was identified as Rwamigabo Wellars, a resident of Rwaza Sector in Musanze District.

Eyewitness told this website that there was no heavy rain when the thunder lightning hit the man at around 15h00 PM.

IGIHE has learned that a security officer also was killed by the lightning strike in the area called Bisate in Kinigi Sector, Musanze District.

Last year, lightning killed 28 people and injured another 53, according to countrywide statistics.

Yet the risk of losing more lives in the coming months is even higher as experts forecast a harsh rainy season which might increase the risks of lightning.

Mass sensitization campaigns are ongoing to educate people about how best they can protect themselves against lightning.

A document developed by the ministry of Disaster Management on the prevention of lightning also lists keeping off bicycles and motorcycles during rain, avoiding wet areas, refraining from standing near open windows as well as avoid handling electrical equipments such us telephones, radios and TV sets to avoid the risk of lightning strikes.

Residents should also steer clear of tall structures such as towers, tall trees, fences, telephone masts, and power lines during rain.
