{Libya has warned it will launch legal action against Rwanda and three other African countries over the alleged nationalisation of the Libyan assets that followed the eight-month long conflict that brought a brutal end to Muammar Gaddafi’s 40-year rule.}
IGIHE has learnt that a deliberation on the fate of the frozen assets in various AU countries was decided at the Summit that took place from 23 to 30 January 2012 in Addis Abba.
In the meantime the Libyan Investment Authority (LIA) has launched legal action against Zambia over the alleged nationalisation of the Zambia Telecommunications Company (Zamtel).
The Authority will reportedly pursue similar action against Chad, Rwanda and Niger, according to Financial Times of London.
In the report the LIA claims that the four countries took advantage of “Libya’s political turmoil to nationalise assets belonging to the country’s $66 billion sovereign funds.”
Hassan Bouhadi, chairman of the LIA, is quoted as saying the legal action related to technology assets in the four countries named. .
The former Libyan government under the Libyan Africa Portfolio (LAP) had invested in Rwandatel as well as Laico Hotel, now Umubano Hotel.
Speaking to this website, the Rwandan Minister of Justice, Johnston Busingye said “{I do not have any information about it, once they file a lawsuit against Rwanda, we shall see it, analyze and then we will go to court to give explanation, but so far we have not received any legal case from Libya government}”
