{Catholic Church has requested parents’ contribution to renovate its old schools’ buildings across the country, saving children from being susceptible accidents.}
The remark was made by the president of Episcopal Council and the spokesperson of Catholic Church in Rwanda , Bishop Philippe Rukamba on Saturday as he presided over the ceremony closing the Catholic Education Week following parents’ requests for need to renovate old schools lest they collapse and hurt students.
“Catholic Church offers quality education and acquaints children with good habits. However, the schools are too old, some classes have clay roof-tiles and others are so dilapidated in a near-collapse situation. The church should put efforts in revamping such schools,” said one parent.
Bishop Philippe Rukamba said that the church is concerned about the sorry state of schools but called for collaboration with parents to address the issue.
“Having old classrooms is a big problem. The government tries and we are doing our best through a mutual contribution dubbed Caisse de Solidalite (Solidarity fund). As such schools are meant for your children, you parents should contribute to the renovations. Let’s feel responsible for the sake of our country,” he said.
The Bishop said that the process would be made possible if every parent with children in Catholic Church’s schools commits to contribute at least Rwf 1000 per term.
The Catholic Church annually celebrates the Catholic Education Week to reflect on and commend best practices and assess areas in need of improvements to advance education.
Bishop Rukamba reminded parents on taking care of their children’s education and requested everyone to tackle the matter of school drop outs among children.
