According to the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) spokesperson, Modeste Mbabazi, Mukunzi was arrested last week allegedly for indecent assault with violence.
Speaking to IGIHE, Mbabazi said that Mutunzi committed suicide while in police custody.
“We heard that, that person was detained in the night of 19th- 20th this month allegedly on indecent assault with violence charges. As investigations were ongoing, we were this morning informed that he had hanged himself,” he explained.
Mbabazi said that Mutunzi hanged himself using a bed cover, shredded and made into a rope.
His body has been taken to hospital for post-mortem.
Without revealing the details of the person Mutunzi is suspected of having assaulted, Mbabazi said that they are still investigating the case.
It is not known where Mutunzi was from 13th April up to 19th when he was put into police custody.
Mutunzi’s family says that he went missing April 13th and had last been seen taking his children to school.
The family says that he disappeared with the car and they called his mobile telephone several times but could not pick.
After calling him many times, an unidentified person on Friday last week responded and told them to relax because Mutunzi was safe.
The deceased’s wife, Valentine Ugirimpuhwe told IGIHE that she was called this morning by Ndera Police Station and told that her husband has died.
Mukunzi was an advocate for Dr Léon Mugesera who was extradited from Canada over genocide crimes. Mugesera was convicted and is serving life in Prison.
