Musafiri was speaking yesterday while attending the commemoration of the genocide against the Tutsi in former National University of Rwanda (NUR), now the University of Rwanda’s College of Arts and Social Sciences in Huye District.
He said that before the 1994, the university had been changed into a plant making genocidaires. He said the history should change and make the university a hub of heroism.
In former NUR, over 4000 lecturers, students and other staff were killed.
Speaking about the history of the University, Musafiri said that they used to teach hatred, divisionism and genocide ideology than teaching humanity, unity and peace.
“The university which would have been the light of the society was the hub of cruelty and darkness. I think that we should pick a lesson from that history and do the difference by changing the university into the hub of heroism, and perform heroic activities which would develop the country,” Musafiri said.
He reminded that former Rwanda Patriotic Army (RPA) which liberated the country was mostly dominated by youth and urged current youth to learn from them.
Musafiri called upon university researchers to invest more efforts in seeking evidences of genocide history and ways to maintain them so that they will last longer.
He said that starting from next academic year, the university will introduce Rwandan history subject which will include genocide against the Tutsi history.
In his testimony, Vincent Hakizimana, a genocide survivor who was a student in NUR during the genocide said that the first student in the university was killed by colleagues.
He said that Hutu students were taught divisionism and hate which resulted into the genocide.
