A woman, Nyirakanani Espérence, resident of Nyakabungo cell, Mpanga sector of Kirehe district has died after drinking sorghum beer suspected of having been poisonous. Other people who shared the same drink with the deceased have since experienced diarrhea and have been taken to health centers for further diagnosis and treatment.
The husband of the deceased, Célestin Muhashyi, said that someone may have poisoned the local brew when they were in field since other people who tasted the same drink in the morning were not affected.
The executive secretary of Nyakabungo cell, Jean d’Amour Mupenzi has said that others who shared the same drink with the deceased headed for traditional healers over fears that they are getting bewitched.
Mupenzi said that he cannot confirm whether it was poison or not since unhygienic conditions can as well cause stomach upsets and food poisoning.
