Emmanuel Ngabonziza, 30, who was intercepted in Nyagahanga Village, Nyankurazo Cell in Kigarama Sector had sneaked the bales into Rwanda from Tanzania.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Hamduni Twizeyimana, the Police spokesperson for the Eastern region, said that Ngabonziza was reported by a resident in Nyagahanga village.
“Police received information from a resident in Nyagahanga village that there was a group of people, who were attempting to sneak bales of clothes into Rwanda. Police swiftly conducted an operation and arrested Ngabonziza with three bales of used clothes while others managed to escape during the operation,” said SP Twizeyimana.
He thanked the resident, who shared information leading to the arrest of the suspect and seizure of the smuggled goods.
The suspect was handed over to RIB at Kigarama station for further investigation to identify and arrest other members of the smuggling ring.
In article 199 of the East African Community Management Act, which is also applicable in Rwanda, smuggled goods are auctioned.

A taxpayer, who commits fraud, is also subject to an administrative fine of one hundred percent (100%) of the evaded tax and a likely imprisonment of between six months and two years.
