PRESIDENT Jakaya Kikwete is expected to take over the chairmanship of the East African Heads of State Summit during the ordinary meeting of the five regional presidents in the Kenyan capital Nairobi on Thursday.
Mr Kikwete, who is also preparing to retire as the fourth head of state of Tanzania next November, is taking over the EA Authority chairmanship relay stick from President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya during the 16th Ordinary Summit of the East African Community (EAC) Heads of State.
An official statement from the Head of the Department of Corporate Communications and Public Affairs at the EAC Secretariat in Arusha, Mr Owora Richard Othieno, revealed that the one-day meeting will be held on Friday at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC) in the city.
The 16th Summit is currently being preceded by ongoing 30th Extraordinary Meeting of the EAC Council of Ministers, which is also taking place in Nairobi with the new Minister for East African Cooperation, Dr Harrison Mwakyembe, attending for the first time in that capacity.
During the summit, the heads of state will among others consider the annual report of the Council of Ministers for the period December 2013 to November 2014; progress report in the implementation of key outstanding decisions of strategic importance to the EAC and the appointment of new judges of the East African Court of Justice.
The Summit will also address the designation of a new Principal Judge of the East African Court of Justice; Appointment of a new Deputy Secretary General from the Republic of Burundi to replace Mr Jean Claude Nsengiyumva, whose tenure of office ends in April this year as well as the renewal of contract of Ms Jesca Eriyo, Deputy Secretary General incharge of Productive and Social Sectors.
The five presidents are also expected to consider various reports on selected priority matters affecting the region, member states and the community in general. Presidents Kikwete, Pierre Nkurunziza of Burundi, Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, Paul Kagame of Rwanda and their host, Mr Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya, will attend the Summit.
