Kigali: Women call for abortion law reform

{Representatives of women in Gasabo district, Kigali city argue that the abortion law has to imply an article stating the limit of time pregnancies should not exceed to facilitate the implementation of the law.}

It was declared on 30th October 2015 during training on women protection laws organized by the National Women Council in Kigali city.

They have been trained on laws protecting rape victims , pregnancy among relatives ,forced marriage and expressed that lack of awareness on how long should one be eligible to abort becomes an obstacle.

“It is vital to set deadline of abortion .Usually, pregnancy should be aborted not later than three months. When it happens to eliminate the fetus after this period it falls under crimes of assassination.” Said Murangwa Eugenie.

Umulisa Vestine, representative of Great Lakes Initiative for Human Rights and Development (GLIHD) said that the issue must be addressed.

“The law must clear limited time in which pregnant women should abort. The matter is between the decision of courts and medics. Sometimes citizens bring court decisions to the hospital after seven or eight months of pregnancy that causes fear to eliminate the fetus.” She said.

Umulisa added that failure to abort lead in unwilling births followed by incapacity to take care of the child.

These women have also acquired awareness on gender based violence, labor law and land management law among others.
