The Senior Human Resource Manager at Kigali Marriott Hotel, Mary Asiimwe told IGIHE that the activity was in the hotel’s program to sensitize its staff on taking care of their health.
“Our workmates and guests are all people who can get cancer and be affected by it. It’s important for them to know that when they do, they seek and get medical help. We highly value, at the Kigali Marriott Hotel, the health of our staff members, hence campaigning and facilitating ways in which they can learn more about their health status because it’s directly linked to their delivery at both a personal and professional level,” she said.
Christa Nkurunziza, a staff at the hotel commended her employer for preparing the activity which helped them gain knowledge on breast cancer. She highlighted that she now knows that not only women can be infected with the breast cancer but it can attack men as well.
“I learned that I should always do regular medical checkup and educate youth about breast cancer and let them know that it does not attack a single group of people,” said Nkurunziza.
The Director and founder of the Breast Cancer Initiative East Africa, Philippa Kibugu-Decuir, revealed that the idea of founding this organization came after her sibling died of cancer for lack of proper and timely treatment.
“I decided to make my humble contribution. As a breast cancer survivor, I teach people on the dangers of breast cancer and how they can avoid it,” she explained.
In her message to the Kigali Marriott Hotel staff, Kibugu sensitized them to take care of their health by avoiding excess consumption of alcohol, tobacco and obesity which are risk factors to cancer. She also reminded them to regularly conduct medical checkups to know how their health stands.
On October 20, 2018, staff from Kigali Marriott Hotel will participate in the annual walk against breast cancer organized by BCIEA.
