Kicukiro residents cry foul over bus park closure

{Kicukiro bus park which was constructed 18 years ago at a cost of Rwf 200 million has been closed and the land where it is seated set to be sold off.}

Kicukiro district officials have decided to offer the tender of Kicukiro bus park to entrepreneurs to be exploited for other businesses respecting the master plan of the district.

The vice mayor in charge of economic affairs in Kicukiro district, Mukunde Angelique told IGIHE that the decision was taken after realizing that Kicukiro bus park was not needed.

“It is a decision taken by the advisory council of Kicukiro district after realizing uselessness of the bus park. We have decided to sell it and seek another place to build a taxi park,” she said.

Some residents of Kicukiro told IGIHE that the closed bus park was needed even though officials say it was useless.

“As far as I am concerned, the bus park was useful. It would help passengers to easily identify which bus to board. It also helped visitors to easily connect their travel routes,” said Tuyishime John, a resident of Gahanga sector.

Uwamahoro Hope, a resident of Kicukiro complained that keeping residents away from participating in determining the type of infrastructures they want is counterproductive.

“How can they realize that the bus stop is useless after more than 10 years of operation? Leaders should consult us in development projects. Their drastic action is a big blow to the passengers and government in general,” she said.

Apart from the sale of Kicukiro bus stop, this district has recently put on sale the land of former Kicukiro market and traders from another market of Kigarama were stopped to build a modern market in 2012.
