The call was made on July 8 in a community meeting with police, local leaders and residents held in Nyarurama Cell.

Speaking to about 700 residents, who attended the meeting, Inspector of Police (IP) Gilbert Nsengiyumva noted that domestic conflicts include gender based violence and child abuse.

He said that most domestic conflicts revolve around couples and sometimes between parents and children.

IP Nsengiyumva further said that violence against children include corporal punishment in form of disciplining them, using them in hard labour activities or domestic chores, neglect, denying them the right to education and right to live including abortion among others.

“Domestic violence can be against a man or woman; it can be in form of physical or psychological torture, denying them their rights like property,” he said.

“In most cases you find all these domestic conflicts are connected to drug abuse or committed by those under the influence of drugs. In most cases, men batter their children after consuming illicit brew. We need to work together and share information on those who distill or sell these psychotropic substances and a preventive measure against domestic violence,” IP Nsengiyumva told the residents.

Alex Mugabe, the executive secretary of Kigarama Sector reminded the residents that conflict-ridden families don’t develop and urged them to live in harmony and in case they develop misunderstandings, they should try to solve them amicably or seek help from concerned authorities.
