Kenyan Man seeks damages after he was aired as Felicien Kabuga

{The High Court in Kenya yesterday watched a documentary for one hour as part of proceedings in a defamation case}.

The documentary is on a case in which Daniel Ngeera has sued Nation Media Group and journalist John Namu over a documentary titled “In the footsteps of Kabuga”, based on the Rwanda genocide.

Ngeera is seeking damages after he was aired as Felicien Kabuga on NTV.

Kabuga is a Rwandan fugitive wanted for the 1994 genocide in which more than one million people were killed.

The US has placed a Sh400 million bounty for his arrest.

In court papers, Ngeera says his moral standing has been put into disrepute as he has been shunned by the society after the documentary was aired on July 8 and 15, 2012.

“The airing portrayed me as a criminal of the highest possible degree with a perpetrator of genocide on the run to escape arrest,” he said.

The businessman says he identified his clothes, including a blue T-shirt on NTV but denied knowing Kabuga.

He said the pictures broadcast were taken at his timber yard in Isiolo without his knowledge.

“I do not remember offering myself for pictures. I do not know for what reason someone would have taken my pictures. I only saw them in the papers,” Ngeera said.

He said the airing portrayed him as a dangerous person who has been disguising himself as a businessman in Isiolo.
