{A man in Kayonza District has been arrested in a police operation following information into his alleged dealings in counterfeit money.}
Mukiga Musare, 31, a taxi conductor in Kayonza, was arrested Friday in Mukarange Sector. He was at the time of his arrest found in possession of at least Rwf160, 000, all fake, according to Inspector of Police (IP) Emmanuel Kayigi, the police spokesperson for the Eastern Province.
According to Kayigi, they received credible information on Mukiga’s criminal dealings, and acting on it, they trailed and arrested him red-handed in Kayonza Cell.
“Mukiga attempted to buy goods using the counterfeit notes, but it was detected by the seller; they immediately called the police and officers arrived shortly before he could leave the venue. When they searched him they recovered 32 fake notes, all in Rwf5, 000 denominations, on him,” IP Kayigi said.
He warned against such tendencies of dealing in counterfeit currencies and called for vigilance and partnership in identifying and arresting individuals involved.
Manufacturing and circulation of counterfeit money in Rwanda contravenes article 604 of the penal code and attracts an imprisonment of two to three years and a fine of up to ten times the value of counterfeit money.
