Kayonza craftsmen cry foul over poor warehouse

{Handicraft makers in Kayonza district have expressed disappointment over the poor warehouse where their craft center is supposed to be housed, making it difficult to as well use electricity and located in a place that is not strategic. They have threatened to boycott the center. }

Despite the good idea of getting them in one place as it would help to get clients and easy to identify where they operate from, they however, say that the crafts center which has been under construction for three years lacks basics which they think would result in losses when they operate in it.

Kayiranga, one of the craftsmen in Kayonza town, says they cannot work from a building that fails to meet the basic standards and requested district leaders to install the necessary facilities.

“Really craftsmen, carpenters and others need power. Working from the warehouse as it is can only spell losses,” he said.

Another party said there is not enough room to accommodate all the craftsmen in the district. Some residents have told IGIHE that the building is beginning to waste even before its opening.

The executive secretary of Kayonza district, Ronald Kiwanuka said that the crafts center was badly designed and promised to redress the issue very soon.

“We realized that the architectural design was poorly done when construction activities were in process. Some parts of the building have started wasting away. We are addressing the and hope users will start operating in the new building soon,” he said. Construction activities of the warehouse will cost Rwf 1 billion to be completed.
