The incident took place on Thursday 29th July 2021 in Nyarutunga II village, Rwimishinya cell in Rukara sector.
The Executive Secretary of Rukara sector, Immaculée Nyirabizeyimana has told IGIHE that the girl who didn’t have enough skills drowned in Cyabatanzi pond before fetching water.
“The girl went to fetch water from Cyabitanzi pond along with other children. Arriving there, the girl joined her colleagues who started swimming but drowned in a while as she was not familiar with the exercise. Residents rushed for rescue but their efforts ended in vain,” she said.
Nyirabizeyimana has revealed that they plan to fence off all ponds in the sector to avoid similar incidents where two children have died under similar circumstances within two weeks.
The body has been taken to Gahini Hospital for postmortem.
